The Singing Cowboy and the Rancher’s Daughter
Okay, follow me if you can. We have a famous Texas politician who was an influential banker and cattleman. His namesake son will become an even more famous American who loved baseball more than almost anything else. Know who I’m talking about? It sounds a lot like President George H.W. Bush and his son, President George W. Bush. Now here is where it gets eerie.
The Texas politician was Guinn Williams, representing the 13th Congressional District in the House of Representatives. His son, Guinn Williams Jr., wanted to play baseball for the Chicago White Sox instead of entering politics. Famous actor and comedian Will Rogers encouraged Guinn to try acting, and nicknamed him ‘Big Boy’ Williams because of his large six foot two inch frame.
The eerie part of the similarities between son Guinn Williams and George W. Bush doesn’t end with the similarities in their life path. Guinn ‘big boy’ Williams, who was a popular character actor from the 1920’s through the 1940’s looks remarkably like future President George W. Bush, and his good-hearted fun-loving personality also matched the future President’s.
After leaving movies Guinn Williams enjoyed his Texas ranch, and the occasional bit part in a television show. In 1962, when actor and friend Joel McCrea visited him on his ranch, McCrea was surprised to find that the usually happy Guinn Williams was deeply depressed. Guinn’s long-time friend and mentor Will Rogers had died in a tragic airplane crash almost thirty years earlier, and Guinn’s mind was on his old friend.
Guinn Williams told Joel McCrea that he had the same dream for the past three nights. Guinn dreamed that he saw Will Rogers riding his horse Soapsuds. Will Rogers smiles at Guinn and says, “Come on, Big Boy, get on your horse and go with me!” A few days later Guinn Williams would feel ill and die of uremic poisoning from kidney failure.
In this singing cowboy adventure Guinn “Big Boy” Williams is the reluctant sidekick to Roy Rogers, who is out of money and looking for work. Together they will help a local rancher’s daughter win an Army contract for trained horses. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
