the God, the Girl and the Devil in the Deep Blue Sea

The best classic author for exciting South Sea Island stories has to be the famed Robert Louis Stevenson, but to get a really great motion picture, we need not only a great story but great actors. One day in 1944 Alan Ladd’s wife, Hollywood talent agent Sue Carol saw a strapping young Francis Timothy McCown riding a horse in Los Angeles Park and she liked what she saw. She had an idea that every woman in America would also like to watch this hunk of a man on the big screen so she introduced herself to the fellow and arranged a screen test, and leading man Rory Calhoun was created.

After wowing the ladies in The Red House, starring Edward G. Robinson, Rory Calhoun made this movie opposite one of Hollywood's sexiest actresses of the 1940’s . . . Rhonda Fleming . . . No, not the ice skater of a later generation . . . This Rhonda Fleming was born Marilyn Louis, and the red-haired buxom girl was spotted by a talent agent while still in Beverly Hills High School. Besides her natural beauty she had a great singing voice. She teamed up with Jane Russell, Connie Haines and Beryl Davis to sing in their church as 'The Four Girls,' and they even produced a record album of church songs that sold over a million copies.

Now that we have our leading man and leading lady, we need some supporting cast and a bad guy. British born character actor John Abbott is the hard-drinking sailor side-kick, and Paul Kelly, famous for being the villain in crime dramas, is our sea captain, and he is bad, but with enough good in him that instead of hating him we feel a bit sorry for him.

So who is the bad guy? . . . Who is the fellow that will strike terror into the hearts of our stranded sailors? Who is the madman that convinces the island natives that he is God? Holy Batman and Robin . . . POW . . . KABOOM . . . It is Alan Napier, later to become famous as the butler for for Batman and Robin on the 1960's Batman television show! Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
