Happy Halloween!

In the early 1960's I lived in Meadville, Pennsylvania and in those days young kids went trick or treating by themselves, without parental supervision . . . mom and dad stayed home to hand out treats to the other neighborhood kids. There were no nasty people who would bury needles in candy or do other bad things to little kids . . . the times were very different from today. I remember our neighbor Mr. Taylor, talking to my dad the day after Halloween, bragging that he had purchased 100 full size Hershey chocolate bars for a nickel each and almost ran out. Dad never had much candy around the house during normal times, and home popped popcorn was the only after dinner treat that I ever experienced, but on Halloween I could dress up and walk around the block that we lived on and wind up with a brown bag full of candy and apples and caramels that I would devour with delight over the next week or two. This light British haunted comedy reminds me of the much simpler and easy-going days. In a big old house in England young daughter Audrey Prescott is plagued with a poltergeist . . . a mischievous spirit who likes to move things and turn portraits around and burn holes in the rugs. This Halloween they host an insurance agent and a businessman whose son is engaged to another daughter and a fellow who is a 'ghost chaser' intent on discovering the poltergeist and scaring him away from the house. Soon nightfall descends on the house and the ghostly hijinks begin . . . frightening all of the men and Mrs. Venning, the cook who wants to leave this haunted home. By morning the poltergeist has had his way and has moved into the body of another, leaving daughter Audrey free from her spirit buddy. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
