Eva Gabor and Her Two Men
Ahhh, what a difference a few years makes! When I was a young teen in the mid 1960's one of my favorite television shows was Green Acres, about a big city lawyer and his dizzy blonde wife who gave up city life to live on a rural farm. The blonde wife was Eva Gabor, who was in her mid 50's at the time.
She was sophisticated and very attractive for a gal in her 50's, but not what a young teen fellow like me would label as a heart-throb. Now here I am, much older, and thanks to the magic of motion pictures there is Eva Gabor at 22 years of age, and all of a sudden she is a real hottie! What a difference a few years makes!
In this movie Eva Gabor is the young blonde in the center of a conflict between two men who both want her. We are on a jungle island in the Pacific at the beginning of World War II, and Richard Arlen is a rogue American pilot who is just wild enough to be unwelcome in the U.S. armed forces and finds himself flying on this small Pacific Island, where he meets the gorgeous Johanna Van Deuren (Eva Gabor).
Nils Asther is Colonel Jan Golas, our bad guy who is engaged to Eva Gabor. Very early in the movie both men face off and the bad blood between them will lead to a life-and-death struggle for Richard Arlen. When the Colonel sees that his woman is falling for the new pilot he decides to send the new fellow on a suicide mission to get rid of him.
Mixed in with this love triangle is the story of a rebel leader who fights against the tyrannical rule of the current government leaders. The bandit rebel leader Andros Banshek is played by veteran actor J. Carrol Naish who, even with his Italian accent that we know isn't from the South Pacific soon becomes one of my favorite characters in this tale of intrigue and murder. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with lots of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
