The Tahiti Tabu Girls and the Spies

Edna Margaret Cox was born in Missouri, but by the time she was sixteen years old, the tall, red-haired beauty was working as a chorus line dancer in a Chicago Burlesque house. She later changed her stage name to Margie Hart and learned how to become a burlesque dancer, and soon became famous in the New York City theaters and nightclubs. She was frequently called the ‘poor man’s Garbo,’ because of her buxom body and sultry eyes.

Never accused of being shy, her shows were frequently raided and the nightclub closed, but that only added to her popularity. Probably in hopes that her notoriety would fill the theater seats, she was hired to star in this Tahiti Island adventure. Talking to a reporter about the movie she supposedly said, “They want me to do it in six days. I’m not that fast. It takes me four minutes just to take off my clothes, and I’m not used to working more than sixteen minutes a day.”

I understand that her notoriety did not make this movie a smash success, and possibly even prevented it from becoming a hit. While quite talented at burlesque, her acting ability while dressed wasn’t terribly impressive. This was her first, last and only appearance in a movie. A few months after this movie was released, she appeared in a Broadway show called, “Wine, Women, and Song,” where she performed a robust striptease, and the show was closed by the police after seven weeks.

Today the only place to see the burlesque lady that shocked and rocked the 1930’s world is in this movie. She is billed as the star, but for my money the best acting is done by supporting actors Guinn ‘Big Boy’ Williams and twenty-year-old Gale Storm. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
