"I have a face like the back end of an elephant," said legendary actor Charles Laughton (1899-1962). Sure, he could never be mistaken for Cary Grant, Randolph Scott or any other heart-throb of the time, but boy-oh-boy could he act! Every time I spy a movie with Charles Laughton that I haven't seen before, I discover afresh the amazing abilities of this master of stage and screen. In one of my favorite Charles Laughton movies, The Beachcomber, Charles Laughton plays opposite his real-life wife Elsa Lanchester. In this drama Laughton is a comical devil-may-care drunk that is tamed by a missionary lady stranded with him on a South Seas Island. In this pirate adventure he is a ruthless and cunning pirate who convinces the King that he is really only s simple sea captain. The King entrusts him with a ship that is supposed to guard another British ship returning to England with a great amount of treasure . . . and the beautiful young daughter of a British Lord. With a cast of famous actors the likes of Randolph Scott, John Carradine, Gilbert Roland and Sheldon Leonard, Charles Laughton still manages to be the dominant character that we despise as the evil pirate Captain Kidd.
