Candid Camera

Television in every living room brought the news of the day to us the same day that it happened, but until the late 1940's and into the 1950's the quickest way to get the news of the world was to visit a motion picture theater and watch the news reels that preceded the main movie. Every large city had multiple crews of news reel cameramen always ready to rush to the scene of the action and capture the video that would be shown on movie screens around the country. When there wasn't much going on the photographers would get a few pretty ladies dressed in the latest fashions and photograph a mini style show with a big city background. That is what happens in this crime adventure, with a spin. Hot-shot news reel photographer Phil Sparr, played by Alan Baxter, is taking newsreel movies of pretty young ladies modeling the latest fashions in front of a big Manhattan bank. Inside a mysterious man is arranging to close his account the next morning and take almost eight hundred thousand dollars in cash. As he is leaving the bank he bumps into one of the models and moves quickly down the street . . . that moment is the focus of the adventure, intrigue an danger that is about to explode on the screen. The man turns out to be a World War II war criminal thought to be dead, but here he is in New York City alive and well. He and a host of henchmen use every trick they can think of to recover that film before anyone realizes who the man is in a couple of frames of movie newsreel. Our newsreel cameraman and a lady reporter trying to get a story face danger and death together as they try to elude the bad guys . . . and there is also a surprising twist in the plot that I should have seen coming but didn't. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
