The Price of Stella Raff

Okay guys, . . . How far would you go to please the sensuous woman that you want to make your own? Would you give up your wealth and career? Would you travel to the ends of the earth and risk your very life if she demanded, before you would even earn a kiss?

Elaine Hamill plays the part of Stella Raff, the beautiful and sensuous woman who has her claws on leading man Lloyd Hughes, who is Daubeney Carshott, a concert pianist and son of the Lord Mayor of London. She had a man who chased after her love a couple of years ago, and she demanded that he leave everything he had in London and travel to the South Seas and personally dive for pearls, bringing her the largest pearl he could find. She told him that only a ‘real’ man would do that for her, and she wants a real man.

Her old boyfriend travels to a South Seas Island and is never heard from again. Now the son of the Lord Mayor of London wants her. He wants to marry her more than anything in the world. She demands that the man she marries will go to the South Seas and personally dive for pearls, bringing her the largest pearl in the world. Only then will she marry him.

The wealthy man goes to a small island in the South Seas to become a pearl diver to earn the love of the beautiful woman from London. As fate would have it, there is another man on this exotic island who hails from London and is also searching for a very large pearl. Thursday Island is also home to a beautiful daughter of a lugger style sailing ship captain, and while Daubeney works to earn a pearl for his lady from London, the island girl will try to earn his love. All we need now is the arrival of the lady from London to check up on her man. She has no idea that both of her suitors are on this same island searching for pearls. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

Jimbo Note: One day I got an e-mail note from a famous opera singer at the Sydney Opera House thanking me for sharing this movie, because it is the only existing film record of her father, pearl-diving, bit part actor Hank Davidson. He is a deck hand on the fishing boat and probably the stunt double for underwater scenes showing a diver in the large, heavy diving suits.
