Eat, Drink and be Merry, for Tomorrow we Dive

One of the most memorable vacations I ever took by myself was many years ago when I was up to my ears in computer work and wanted dearly to get away from computers and everything digital. I got into my car and headed south for Florida, winding up on a small island named Cedar Key in what I call the 'armpit' of Florida - that area along the Gulf Coast where the state curves to the South. In the summer Cedar Key is a busy tourist spot but in chilly January it was a sleepy fishing village. I stayed in a small hotel where there were only two other guests - and elderly couple who wintered every year at this small hotel. The room I stayed in was called the 'Boone-Buffett' room, as both Richard Boone, the actor, and Jimmy Buffett often slept. I was told that Jimmy Buffett would sail down the Suwanee River from his home and ended up at Cedar Key and this room, where he would occasionally step out onto the second floor porch outside the room and extemporaneously serenade the tourists walking below. Now, what impressed me the most was that this room was not movie star luxurious, but quite the opposite. It contained a bed, a dresser and a night stand with a lamp . . . no television . . . no radio . . . no telephone . . . but it was at the time the only room in the small hotel with a bathroom and shower inside the room! I imagine that Buffett and Boone may have felt like I did - this was the perfect spot to get away from all of the entanglements of a busy life. For my week there I spent my days reading books on the porch or walking the streets of the small village and making new friends among the year-round residents. This movie is about a celebrated concert pianist in London who is tired of the busy rat-race of life in spite of the wealth that it has provided him. The woman he loves also for some reason wants a man who does more than play a nice tune on a piano. She promises him that if he makes a man of himself by going to the South Seas and diving for a pearl himself, bringing her a huge pearl that he got by risking his life diving in the ocean she will accept the pearl and marry him. So off he goes to Thursday Island in search of adventure and a world class pearl for his woman, but instead discovers a new life, a new woman, and all of a sudden that big pearl that he struggles for has much less meaning to him - he has learned about a new way of life in an island paradise much different from the busy streets of London. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the adventure.
