I don't know if this movie was a blockbuster when it premiered on January 4, 1943, but it is surely way ahead of most crime thrillers of that day for plot and imagination. In one fast-paced sixty five minutes we deal with murder, political corruption, courtroom drama, mistaken identity, life insurance fraud, kidnapping, an innocent mama going to prison . . . oh, . . . and a heckuva little girl caught in the middle . . . along with her farm-raised mama. I'll allow you to enjoy all of the juicy details, but here is just a little part of the story line that you will enjoy: Drunk George kills a nightclub owner and wants to run away with a nightclub singer, but promises his wife that he will stick around for one more day to celebrate his little girl's fourth birthday by having a picnic in the park. When the little girl takes a walk with her new baby doll and dad's fountain pen with his name on it, she meets a lonely stranger Slim, who steals the pen and promptly falls over a high cliff to his death. Drunk killer George then leaves town with nightclub singer Joyce and when the body of the unknown stranger is found with George's fountain pen in his pocket everyone thinks that the dead man is drunk George. A district attorney with eyes on the Governor's job builds a case against the little girl's mama that accuses her of killing drunk George for the insurance money, and the hapless mama who doesn't know what the heck is happening goes to prison for killing her husband, and the aspiring district attorney that put her in prison becomes Governor. Okay . . . now it is going to get really interesting . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter liberally drizzled all over it and enjoy the show!
