The Most Famous Boy in the World

This story by Aldous Huxley takes place largely in Italy, and the scenes brought back memories that resulted in this web site and my passion for finding and sharing the first recorded performers on records, radio, television and motion pictures. In 1994 I was on a guided tour of the Tuscan region of Italy, and my most overriding and lasting memory was of the cathedrals, the great Duomo's like the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore . . . Now, don't get me wrong, there is beauty both natural and man-made in every corner of this world, but those Italian cathedrals . . . They were the beginning of my journey that has produced this web site. As the tour guide was explaining the construction of great cathedrals that were built 500 years ago, and took more than a hundred years to construct, I thought about the men who laid each large stone in the walls . . . I imagined that some of the men worked from their youth till their death, and their sons took over placing row after row of huge stones that remain today and are part of cathedrals that 500 years later are still a proud legacy of men who worked a lifetime to build them . . . Not only is there nothing in almost-rural Niles, Ohio where I live that was built 500 years ago, indeed there is very little in the land of America that will stand the test of 500 years and still be beautiful, useful and relevant. I suddenly felt very insignificant in the large scope of this world, and that made me restless and searching for a way to create something that might outlive me . . . something greater than a collection of 'things' that I would work a lifetime for and have scattered to the four winds when I pass . . . something that might bring beauty and joy to people that I never meet, maybe even to people that are not yet born . . . like the great stone masons that built cathedrals that stand long after their death. Those thoughts led to this . . . the preservation of the works of great performers from the first years of recorded media . . . That is why I strive mightily to organize and index ever actor in every movie - especially the ones that didn't get marquee credits . . . Their performances will outlast their lives because I have the skills to build web pages and a love for old movies . . . as the stone masons in Italy laid brick after brick, day after day, I can share movie after movie, one day at a time building this cathedral of honor for the actors of early motion pictures . . . and maybe . . . just maybe . . . some good folk around the globe will remember an old fan from a little town in Ohio as they enjoy the show.
