Dead Men Walking, Dead Men Killing, and the Strange Drifter

The 25th of August in 1903 was the hottest day recorded that year, but legend has it that July 18, 1903 was the hottest day that year in Seagoville, Texas. In fact, that day was so hot that Theodore Childress Wills, born on that day, was supposedly nicknamed ‘Chill’ Wills because of the heat of that day, at least that’s what the Hollywood studio publicity department wanted fans to believe. Of course, with a name like Chill Wills, his two children would be named Jill Wills, born in 1939, and Will Wills, born in 1942.

At the age of 12, Chill Wills began performing in Vaudeville shows between the burlesque acts, and eventually formed a musical group that played at the Trocadero in Hollywood, where he was spotted by a movie executive. Later he humorously claimed that he had a college degree from the ‘Minsky College of Burlesque.’ He has more than a hundred movies to his credit between 1934 and 1978, usually as a character actor with the voice that you recognize before you even see his face.

In this movie, Chill Wills is the ramrod of the Davis ranch, and during the opening scene he narrates the comment that this calm and peaceful day will bring the biggest trouble to the High Lonesome that the ranch ever had.

John Drew Barrymore, the son of silent screen star John Barrymore, and the father of actor/director Drew Barrymore, is a young man on the run. If this young fellow didn’t have bad luck, he’d have no luck at all. Trouble follows him like a dark storm cloud, and he might just deserve it. Is he really just an innocent man with a streak of bad luck, or is he the center of the trouble that is about to invade the High Lonesome? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
