Too Many Clues . . .

I've watched a great number of murder mysteries, and I pride myself on the ability to spot the telling clue that is provided in such a casual manner that most viewers will certainly miss it. I assume that many of you are also pretty sharp folk and can also spot the vital clue that everyone else doesn't see until the very end. Richard Carling is a businessman preparing for dinner in his mansion with a lady. Before the mysterious lady arrives he is visited by his partner, who he is obviously cheating, and we discover that this man is most likely a scoundrel, and when he is murdered we will probably not shed any tears. After his partner leaves, and before the mysterious lady arrives, a gangster from Chicago who has flown to London that day pops in for a surprise visit, wanting revenge for something that the scoundrel did when he was in America some years earlier. It appears that this gangster will kill the scoundrel . . . ahhh . . . but when the Inspector arrives we casually learn that the dead man's face has been bashed in to the extent that he is not recognizable . . . BINGO . . . I thought to myself that I had spotted the elusive clue . . . The vital and most important clue to what would lead to a surprise ending . . . and then something else happened, and I was certain that I had once again spotted the vital piece of information that led in a different direction . . . How clever of the authors to toss out an early 'false' clue . . . a red-herring, so to speak. Then, I was aghast as the web of lies and deceit being woven by virtually every person in the story provided so many false clues . . . or were they false clues? I am so confused . . . I cannot remember ever, ever, ever being so confused and baffled by the clues . . . I can see by the little progress bar on the video screen that the story is only minutes from the end, and while I have correctly determined a couple of salient facts, I am no closer to the revelation of truth that will make it all come together . . . It is so frustrating . . . So deliciously, exasperatingly, confounding and puzzling . . . At the same time I am exhilarated by the cunning of the authors and my inability to see through the veil of clues. I am so grateful that I popped a really big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter drizzled liberally over it before I enjoyed this astounding mystery.
