The Convict, the Cop, and the One-Legged Marine

If you could look up the word ‘hard-boiled’ in a dictionary from the 1940’s and 1950’s you might see a picture of Dick Powell. If you looked up the word ‘Cop’ in that same dictionary, you might see a picture of Regis Toomey. This noir gangster show features both actors at their best. Dick Powell is Rocky, fresh out of prison after stealing a hundred thousand dollars that has never been found. Regis Toomey is Police Lieutenant Gus Cobb, trailing Rocky to catch him with the hot money. . . . There is one tiny problem with this strategy. . .

Rocky claims that he had nothing to do with the payroll robbery and he has no idea where the stolen loot is. Of course, Police Lieutenant Cobb doesn’t believe him and the cop tells Rocky that he will follow him day and night until he catches him going for the stolen loot. Rocky doesn’t know where the stolen money is, and he doesn’t know who framed him for stealing the money, but he will find out who framed him and who has the stolen money, even if it kills him. . . .

But wait, if this is a true noir crime adventure we need a dame, and not just any dame. We need a woman who is so bad that she is good. . . . . Rhonda Fleming, as Nancy, is so, so good. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
