Shameless Hussy wearing nothing but Soap Flakes

PC 49 was a popular BBC Radio programme that was turned into two movie adventures. For us not-British folk, 'PC' is short for Police Constable . . . the patrolman on the beat . . . the foot soldier in the battle against crime in the city. Della Dainton, played by Christine Norden, is a blonde gal who is famous as a soap girl . . . Della poses for risqué advertising photos wearing nothing but the sponsor's soap flakes and a smile in magazines, newspapers and billboards. Jimmy Pewter is a wealthy millionaire who is in love with Della, but his wealthy family is, of course, not in favor of his affections for the advertising girl. Despite this, Jimmy wants to marry Della and has written his will such that in the case of his death she will inherit all of his wealth. Della has conspired with her new lover Victor Palantine, played by Leslie Bradley, to kill the millionaire so that Della and he can take possession of his great wealth. The challenge is how to craft a perfect murder so that the wealthy Jimmy can be killed in front of the world with no suspicion that it was a planned murder. The plan is to tell Scotland Yard that the famous soap bubble woman's life is in danger and she needs the protection of London's finest on this very night. PC 49, Archibald Berkeley-Willoughby is chosen for the job of standing guard over the famous bubble-bath lady for the night. Also arranged for the evening is a visit from the millionaire lover on the balcony outside her penthouse suite, and his murder by her new lover Palantine, with the honest and loyal PC 49 nearby to provide proof that the dead millionaire was a prowler on the fire escape and killed accidentally by Palantine. It all looks cut and dried until PC 49's girlfriend Joan Carr, played by Joy Shelton, gets a whiff of something fishy. The Constable's girlfriend visits Della with a couple of questions and is kidnapped by Della and Palantine. Simple street patrol constable PC 49 may lose his girlfriend and the killers may get away with murder for profit . . . unless . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
