Gold Dust, Tommy, and a Dog Named Lassie

In 1859 Elizabeth Gaskell wrote a short story featuring a female collie named Lassie, who saves the day. In 1938 the popular national picture magazine “The Saturday Evening Post” published a short story about a dog named Lassie, written by Eric Knight, called “Lassie Come Home.” In 1943 a feature motion picture was made, and since then a dog named Lassie has been the star of radio programs, motion pictures, and television series. There are only three animal actor characters who have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, . . . silent film stars Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart, and sound motion picture star Lassie.

In this adventure, Lassie is owned by a gold miner, and when he hits a vein of gold, he and Lassie head to town to tell his partner. Unfortunately, his partner is dead, and another man is now his partner. Jonathan, his new partner, and Tommy, the young son of the dead partner head back to the hills painted with gold dust to find their fortune. This leads to that, and the partner helps Jonathan mine the gold, but as the gold dust piles up, the partner becomes very greedy, and wants all of the gold for himself.

Soon, the new partner tosses Jonathan over a cliff to die, and then he poisons Lassie, so that now all of the gold is his alone. Only young Tommy is left to deal with the evil partner. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
