Pill Poppers & Show Stoppers

The 1950’s was the decade of the pill. . . . . In 1950’s science fiction space men traveled the universe and their food intake was a pill for breakfast, a pill for lunch and a pill for dinner. . . . Any illness could be cured with the proper pill. Our spy comedy is all about pills . . . . Vitamin pill popper Archie MacGregor and the evil professor who creates pills that can destroy cities more completely than the Atom Bomb. The professor has created the pills for mad man Nakano, who intends to rule the world after destroying ten cities with his magic pills as a demonstration of his power. Pill popping Archie and his buddy Rocky Wilson are privates in the Army serving in Korea, and they are headed for a vacation in Tokyo. In the airport waiting for their plane for Tokyo they meet beautiful airline stewardess Peggy, played by Martha Hyer. Rocky, played by Steve Forrest, falls for Peggy and tries to arrange a date with her when they arrive in Tokyo. Rocky’s buddy Archie is a vitamin pill junkie. . . . He has a belt that resembles an ammunition belt, but instead of bullets lined up around the belt there are bottles of vitamins. . . . Many bottles of vitamins. When they get to Tokyo Archie and Rocky find a black market store where they will purchase civilian clothes so that they can party in Tokyo where enlisted men are not permitted. Unfortunately for them, the mad man who wants to destroy ten cities hides the bottle containing the destructive pills in the pocket of a suit coat in the store . . . . The pocket of the suit that goofy Archie will purchase. Archie and Rocky are now the targets of the mad man and his henchmen as they try to get their powerful pills back. Meanwhile, we learn that airline stewardess Peggy is actually a spy and she is given the assignment of finding what mad man Nakano is up to. So Rocky and Peggy, and Archie with his new Geisha friend Michiko, are in grave danger from mad man Nakano, who just happens to run a school for Geisha girls. In addition to the popularity of pills in the 1950's, college kids loved to do things that mystified their parents, like seeing how many of them could squeeze into a telephone booth, or having a 'Chinese fire drill' while their car was stopped at a traffic light, or swallowing live gold fish. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
