Who's Kissing the Maid Now?

In the historic Essex town of Dunmow, England there is an annual town festival . . . Nothing very unique about that . . . But for hundreds of years the town has been holding a trial . . . A trial with a judge, a prosecutor, a jury of twelve townsfolk . . . and a young married couple who is put on trial. This trial examines the life of the young married couple for the past twelve months and a day to determine whether the loving couple has been true and faithful to each other for the entire year. And if found true and faithful, the couple becomes the proud owner of a flitch . . . What is a flitch, you ask? A flitch is a whole side of bacon! This tradition is real and true, and the flitch of Dunmow was even mentioned by Chaucer in his writings. So far this sounds like a nice small-town tradition without much drama or possibility of excitement . . . until Hungarian beauty Marta comes to town! The Topham home consists of Grandpa Hillary Topham, Aubrey and Marjorie, and young son Basil, played by David Tomlinson, and his new wife Julie, played by early rock 'n roll singing star Petula Clark. The Topham's are newcomers to the town of Dunmow . . . They have only lived in the village for fifteen years . . . Not only that, but they are having the devil of a time finding a good maid, and Grandpa Hillary burns the kippers every morning for breakfast. Enter Marta, a beautiful young Hungarian girl who will become the new maid. The women in town simmer when she is near because the men in town are falling all over themselves for her attention. When young David and Julie are nominated to stand trial at the town festival as the potential winner of the flitch. Havoc is the order of the day as events hurtle towards the festival and the trial of David and Julie, and the maid's passionate kiss with David that is seen by the old-maid sister of the Vicar will not help things along . . . not to mention the disappearance of the flitch, brought all the way from New Zealand because of the shortage in England. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
