Rome, the Eternal City of Culture, of Legend, . . . and Love!
Young Giovanni, played by Montgomery Clift, is in love with an American woman who is visiting her sister in Rome. Jennifer Jones is Mary Forbes, who has loved Giovanni as much as he has loved her. Their love affair has been torrid and passionate, sucking the very breath out of them both.
As our love story opens, Mary is going to the railroad station in Rome to catch a train for Paris and then back to America. You see, after her weeks of torrid love with Giovanni, she is suddenly home-sick for her husband and little daughter back in America. At the train station Mary discovers that she can take a 7pm train to Milan and catch another train to Paris, or wait until 8:30 for a direct train to Paris.
Mary takes the 7pm train because she wants to get out of town as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, while Mary is sitting on the train waiting for it to leave the station, Giovanni arrives desperately searching for her. He convinces her to get off of the 7pm train, and now he has a little more than an hour to convince Mary to leave her husband and begin a new life with him in Italy.
Mary only needs to wait one more hour before returning to her American husband, what is the harm in spending it with the young Italian man who worships her? What can happen to two people desperately in love in a busy train station in Rome, Italy in one hour? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
