The Saint's Big Gamble

Simon Templar, The Saint, is a character created by Leslie Chateris in a series of murder mystery books in the late 1920's, with motion pictures like this and later a television series with Roger Moore playing The Saint. Few of the motion pictures are in public domain yet, but this one gives us a peek at the famous jewel thief and criminal turned Robin Hood, helping solve crimes by bending the law like the police could never do. I purchased this copy from a collector in England, and it is in very rough shape . . . if any of you know of a better copy please let me know so that I can share a better copy . . . but until then, let's join the suave criminal turned detective as he solves the murder of a friend in London. The Saint gets a telegram from a British society gal that he knows who asks him for help, but by the time Simon Templar reaches London the girl has been murdered. It seems that she had some large gambling debts . . . but like in the U.S., gambling is illegal so the action is in the seedy underworld of crime and the police don't have a clue where to start looking . . . The Saint discovers that the gambling mob runs a casino on a barge on the Thames, and the gangsters systematically get London's wealthy young men and women to gamble away the family fortunes, and when they run out of cash and run up a big I.O.U. - it means either death, or joining the gang and bringing in the next victims. The mystery that we will try to solve before it is revealed to us is the identity of 'Mr. Big' - the head of the whole operation that few of the gangsters have ever seen. I made my guess early on who the big boss would turn out to be . . . of course you know it must be someone that we've been introduced to that is so far beyond suspicion that we would not suspect him or her . . . So I made my choice . . . after watching so many gangster movies I think I have a sixth sense about who the writers would select as the villain . . . So I made my choice . . . and was absolutely wrong! Sheesh, either I'm getting bad at choosing, or the author was smarter than I am . . . Either way, I am not angry that I couldn't choose correctly, rather pleased that I was able to be fooled. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and let me know if you selected the correct person.
