The Blue-Eyed Greek, The Conch Beauty, and Death on the Reef

In 1905 Greek businessman John Cocoris, living in Tarpon Springs, Florida, recruited young Greek fishermen and divers from the islands in the Mediterranean seas off the coast of Greece. The young Greeks could dive the shallow waters without any diving equipment to harvest the sponges. Today there is a greater percentage of Greek people living in Tarpon Springs than any other city in America.

Meanwhile, English immigrants were settling in the Keys and sponge diving in the Glades. These sponge divers are known as the Conchs. It was an unwritten law that the Conchs would not dive in the shores off Tarpon Springs, and the Greeks would not dive in the Glades. Violating that understanding would lead to very bad things.

Robert Wagner is Tony Petrakis, the young son of a Greek sponge diver, and this year the sponges are not plentiful. The only Greek fisherman with a good harvest of sponges is a fellow who dared to dive deep into the waters of the 12-mile reef. The last time anyone dared to dive there, it was Tony’s family, and his brother died in the attempt.

Peter Graves is a Conch sponge diver from Key West diving for sponges in the Glades. The two young men will meet and fight over sponges, and over the young English girl who is supposed to become the wife of Peter Graves’ character. Death and Destruction will visit this story as the Greek and the Conch struggle for sponges and the hand of the blonde Gwyneth, played by Terry Moore. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
