The Devil Girl from Mars, and the War of the Sexes

In 1954 the Shepperton Studios finished filming a television show ten days early. With ten empty days before the next production was scheduled at the studios, the Danziger brothers decided to quickly turn a London sci-fi play into a motion picture. Reminiscent of the 1951 “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” there is a spaceship that has landed in the distance, with a giant mechanical monster inside.

Unlike the earlier space visit, this ship is manned by a woman. A very tall, imposing and statuesque woman from Mars, played by Patricia Laffan. During the last great war on Mars, a war between the sexes, the more powerful women have almost destroyed all the males on Mars and may become extinct if they cannot find new males to mate with.

Fortunately for the Devil Girl from Mars, she has landed next to a small pub in the Highlands of Scotland. Fortunately for the Devil Girl from Mars, there is a young, healthy newspaper man among the handful of visitors at the Scottish Inn. Unfortunately for the Devil Girl from Mars, the men on earth may be a bit more resourceful than the men on Mars. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
