What's in a Name?

An American in a cheap London room writes a suicide note and slowly walks out into the street and heads for the Themes and the end of his worries. He came to England during the war and married a British girl when the war ended, but his life has gone into the trash bin since then. His wife divorced him and took his little girl with her, and then she died and his little girl is staying with her grandparents. He has a tattered past and no future, and the time has come to end it all. Before he can jump to his death in the river two henchmen attack him and knock him out. He wakes up in a luxurious apartment and is made a very unique offer. A wealthy business con man wants to buy his body . . . The deal is that the racketeer will set the American up with a new identity and establish him as the boss of a crooked business, while the real con man pretends to be his private secretary. This will go on for 18 months, and then the American, who has the reputation of being the big corrupt businessman will die, and the 'private secretary' will slide out of the country with all the money. The American's little girl, living with her grandparents, will get a chunk of cash in exchange for his life, so the American agrees . . . . Now I can hear the gears turning in your mind already . . . You are thinking that in the end this will lead to that and the real crime boss will die, and the American will walk away into the sunset with the money instead . . . . Trust me . . . . That is wa-a-a-a-a-ay too simple for these clever storytellers. After agreeing to the deal, one of the con men suggests that the American must be crazy . . . or just plain dumb . . . . Of course, he is neither . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
