When it Rains in Paris, or Love at the Arc de Triomphe

I can still hear my mother’s voice from when I was a very young boy . . . . “Jimmy, Your hair is still wet . . . If you go outside now you will catch your death of cold.” Many years ago when life seemed to be simpler, there were no viruses, no germs spread by sneezing or coughing, only the cold rain that made one ill. Twice in this drama Elizabeth Taylor walks in the Paris rain and both times she ends up in hospital with flu that endangers her life, just from walking in the rain. . . . . Ahhh . . . . . The simpler days . . . . . Sometimes ignorance can truly seem blissful.

As our romantic adventure begins we meet Van Johnson, one of the most handsome leading men of the 1954 motion picture industry. We are in the waning days of World War II and he is a reporter for the Stars and Stripes military newspaper in Paris. Paris has been liberated and the people of Paris jam the streets in celebration. Random women are grabbing and kissing soldiers. Van Johnson is a military officer working for the Stars and is grabbed and kissed by several woman, one of whom is young Elizabeth Taylor. Elizabeth Taylor is the first of three Hollywood temptresses that will enter his life.

Later, in his old hangout, the Dingo Bistro, he meets beautiful Donna Reed, and their attraction to each other is immediate and powerful. What are the chances that these two women in Paris know each other? What are the chances that they would be sisters, both competing for the same handsome man?

Donna Reed is stable and reliable and would make the best wife and mother any man could envision, while Elizabeth Taylor is the wild child, searching for fun, love, and excitement every moment. Which woman will grab the heart of Van Johnson? What will happen to his heart once she has it? No worries, another of Hollywood's most beautiful ladies, Eva Gabor, will enter his life.

Then Van Johnson encounters the biggest crises that any man could face. Before he was British Secret Agent 007, Roger Moore was the handsome young tennis-bum gigolo in this story. Now Van Johnson should worry. It is so sad sometimes when life intrudes on our pleasures. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
