Icarus and Whirled Peas

First off, I deny any knowledge of a cow on the second floor of my high school. Papa was a preacher so I lived in three towns from birth to leaving home for college. I was born in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, home of the terrible weather forecasting groundhog, and went to high school in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, made famous on September 11. The Shanksville school at the time of my matriculation was a three story building housing kindergarten at one end and twelfth grade at the other end. Shanksville is a small village with no traffic lights and only a couple of stop signs among the hundred or so homes clustered at the bend in the road. In my class of 1969, three of the 26 students came from Shanksville and the other 23 lived on farms surrounding the village. Many of the farms raised dairy cows . . . It seems that it is possible to lead a cow up a staircase to an upper floor, but utterly impossible to lead a cow back down a staircase, forcing the use of a crane to hoist any cow on an upper floor back down to the ground. Again I swear that I have no knowledge of any such cow, even though the statute of limitations is probably long past.

In this British school drama the boys at a boarding school outside London have planned an escapade much larger than most school pranks, and before it is finished the world will be watching as the drama plays out. Alastair Sim is the headmaster at the school and before the event begins he has several clues that something big is going to happen, but he and the other teachers cannot discover what is afoot. The Hampden's have three sons at the school, Max, Johnny and Icarus, and they seem to be at the center of the escapade, but almost all of the students at the school . . . and indeed other schools in the area . . . are involved in this grand escapade that will engulf much of Europe in its intricate plot. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
