The Copper Gone Bad

NOTE: The copy of this movie that I purchased has four places where the video freezes for a few seconds, but the sound continues. While it is annoying, nothing critical to the story is lost.

Scotland Yard Superintendent John Patrick Harcourt, played by Eddie Byrne, is a couple of weeks away from retirement. He has been an honest cop all his career, and he hopes that his baby grandson will one day wear a policeman's uniform. He never had much money, but has always enjoyed his time at the Yard chasing after criminals. Superintendent Harcourt has a young daughter named Shirley, played by Jill Adams. Shirley married a policeman who got killed in the line of duty, and she is raising her young son John Patrick with the hopes that he will become anything except a cop. Master criminal Jim Danvers has ruled London for years, and Superintendent Harcourt has been chasing him for years, but has never been able to pin any crimes on him. Gangster Jim Danvers has been chasing Superintendent Harcourt for years also . . . Trying to bribe him into looking the other way while his henchmen commit their crimes. Until this day Harcourt has been an honest cop, never willing to muss himself with the dirt of crime . . . Until this day . . . Gangster Danvers has a young and handsome henchman who entices the cop's beautiful young daughter out on a date . . . Dinner, dancing, drink . . . . and Crime! Near the end of the evening the handsome henchman arranges for the Superintendent's daughter to be framed for a gas station holdup that ends in murder. Gangster Danvers tells the retiring Scotland Yard Superintendent that he has the evidence that will prove the guilt of his daughter . . . . But will not use it if the retiring copper will accept a bribe and close his case against the gangster. With much angst the retiring copper goes dirty to save his daughter from prison time. Harcourt retires from Scotland Yard and lives in peace with his wife and daughter, and what is done, is done. Of course crime is always a bit messy, and soon he and his daughter are at the edge of being discovered by Scotland Yard, and both may be in peril of going to prison . . . . . It seems that there is no way out of this mess . . . . Well . . . . There may be One Way Out . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
