Turning Boys into Men in Aberdovy, Wales

As an American, I got a swift slap in the face in the first scene of this British story . . . . . Mind you, I think I deserved it . . . Or at least I recognized the caustic line as part of the American past that the rest of the world watched with God only knows what thoughts. The Korean War ended in 1953 . . . . Actually . . . . As I write this, the conflict has not ended yet. Major fighting ended in 1953, and as our story opens it is 1955 and a British prisoner of war has finally been freed by the North Koreans and is in New York and on his way back home to England. In England he is being celebrated at 'Last Man Mike' – the last prisoner of war from the Korean conflict and a national hero. He valiantly stayed with his ship while all the other men escaped capture, but he was captured and held prisoner. In the early 1950's America Senator McCarthy got all of America believing that everyone in America and the world was a Communist bent on destroying America unless they could prove otherwise. In Hollywood many actors, directors and screenwriters who showed any sympathy for the plight of poor blue collar working men over the authority of the business owners were branded as Communists and were forbidden from working on motion pictures. So the only question that a Yank reporter asks of Britain's most respected war hero is to ask him if it is true that he is a Communist . . . . War hero Mike Merriworth, played by Keiron Moore, gives the reporter a withering look and silently walks away. Back in England he is challenged by his Navy commander to help train young boys and be a part of turning them into men. In the Welsh town of Aberdovey there is a 26 day school for boys called 'Outward Bound' that takes boys from all parts of England and tries to teach them not only a bit of discipline but also to push the boys into achieving far more than they ever imagined that they could . . . . The grand challenge of giving boys with unequal backgrounds a very equal opportunity at personal growth and greatness. In this story it is not only the boys who will learn to achieve their potential, but even their instructor 'Last Man Mike' . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show . . . Oh . . . . And about the 'Blue Peter' . . . . That is a naval flag flown above a ship that indicates that the ship is ready to sail, and everyone aboard is ready for whatever might be ahead.
