The Astronauts, the Moon Monster, and the Daughters of Aphridite

Patsy Sloots was a gorgeous young girl living in a working-class neighborhood in South London. She left school at the age of sixteen and got a job as a clerical trainee at the Ministry of Information in London, earning 5 pounds a week. On the way to her job in London she always read movie magazines, nurturing a deep desire to become a motion picture star.

In 1947 the J. Arthur Rank Organisation signed her to a contract, changed her name to Susan Shaw, and began teaching the beautiful girl how to become a sophisticated actress. She became very popular but didn’t become a super star until she met and married American actor Bonar Colleano, who was acting in British movies that needed a brash and bold American, often playing the part of an American gangster.

The couple would become Britain’s motion picture golden couple, and their popularity skyrocketed. Unfortunately, their motion picture fame would only last for four wonderful years. In 1958, her thirty-four-year old husband was driving back to London from a stage performance in Liverpool when he crashed into a levee and was killed.

The loss of her husband was so profound that she lived with an ever-growing depression and dependence on alcohol, effectively ending her career. It took only twenty years until Susan Shaw died from a failed liver, at the age of forty-nine.

In this campy science fiction adventure Susan Shaw is a daughter of Aphrodite living with a dozen sisters on the thirteenth moon of Jupiter. A space ship with a combined American and British crew blasts off from England to find out if there might be life on this earth-like moon. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
