The Producer's Promise

Before our thriller opens the producer of the story gives every viewer a promise . . . We are told that the impact of this story is so terrifying that it may have an unforeseen effect on us . . . it may kill us! The producer then gives us all a guarantee that if anyone in the movie theater audience dies as a result of watching this story, that dead audience member would have their entire funeral expenses paid for by the producer. . . Before we talk about this 1958 movie, let me tell you about the real screaming skull . . . at Bettiscomb Manor in Dorset, England you can see a wooden box containing the skull of a black slave who wanted more than anything else in the world to have his remains taken back to his native land when he died. This was not done, and his skull, inside that wooden box, screams every evening . . . . Terrifying everyone in earshot . . . . True story . . . . In our 1958 drive-in terror story Eric marries a young girl Marian, and they live on her family estate with mentally challenged gardener Mickey. One night wife Marian slips on the edge of the lily pond and falls in and dies. Now, a couple of years later, her husband Eric has fallen in love with Jenni, and as our adventure opens he is taking her to the mansion that he has inherited from his first wife Marian. Eric inherited not only the mansion, but the services of Mickey, the strange gardener/groundskeeper. It doesn't take long before strange things start happening at the mansion, and new wife Jenni may be going insane . . . Or maybe the spirit of first wife Marian is haunting the new loving couple . . . . Her skull appears in places that it should not be . . . . screams in the night ring out as Eric and Jenni believe that the half-wit gardener must be plotting some deranged revenge for the death of Marian . . . I won't go much further in the plot, but I will tell you that if you are a horror movie fan you will early-on make a decision on who is good and who is evil . . . You may be correct . . . or not . . . . But no matter . . . . Because you will not predict the terrifying ending . . . . I guarantee that . . . . But I will NOT guarantee to pay for your final expenses if you are scared to death at the ending . . . . Someone is knocking on my door . . . . I must go and answer the knock . . . . Who could it be? . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
