WHo Shot J.R.?

We can no longer afford to be stupid. Today one stupid tweet or one stupid video clip can ruin a person's life forever when it goes 'viral.' In March of 1980 there was no twitter, no Facebook, no social media, but the first 'viral' incident that I can remember was created by C.B.S. television when J.R. Ewing, played by Larry Hagman, was shot in the final episode of the season for the popular television show Dallas. From March until November 21 I think every living person in the U.S. had spoken and mused over the words, 'Who Shot J.R.?' . . . . Ronald Reagan was campaigning for President against incumbent Jimmy Carter and a popular Republican campaign button proclaimed, 'A Democrat Shot J.R.' . . . . Now, these memories flood back to this old mind because of the star of this cowboy western from 1958, a couple of decades before the TV show Dallas . . . Jim Davis, Marshal Clint Wade in this adventure, played the patriarchal father of the Ewing clan in that famous TV show, and although Davis has more than a hundred appearances in other movies and TV shows, this is one of his rare appearances in a movie that has gone into public domain. Cheney Holland, played by Don Megowan, and Marshal Clint, played by Jim Davis, are childhood friends who grew up to be on the opposite sides of the law. Clint is a straight shooting Marshal who does his best to apply the law fairly and evenly, and Cheney is a tough-as-nails outlaw who may have a lust to kill. As our adventure opens Clint and his posse are chasing Cheney, his brother and another outlaw buddy, and when Cheney's brother gets shot Cheney stops to help him and is captured by the Marshal. Later Cheney escapes with the help of his girlfriend and Marshal Clint goes on the chase, ending in a confrontation and wild shoot-out at Minn's place that is the highlight of the movie. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
