Errol Flynn's Angels

As I write this President Barak Obama is in Cuba with his family enjoying the first contact that an American President has had with Cuba since 1928. He is meeting with Raúl Castro, younger brother of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.

This movie was filmed in 1959 by producer Barry Mahon about the Cuban revolution, and while I’d love to give you interesting tid-bits about its production, there is more that I do not know about this movie than what I do know. The original name, 'Cuban Rebel Girls' and a few seconds of the introduction that included the title and other text have been removed and the title changed to 'Assault of the Rebel Girls.'

I understand that it was filmed in Cuba with the help of Fidel Castro and the revolutionaries, but cannot tell you if the cast and crew actually met the leaders of the revolution. I can tell you that I am fairly certain that Errol Flynn did not lend his money to the venture, because it seems that he was in dire financial straits at the time.

I can also tell you that it seems that the leading actress, seventeen-year-old Beverly Aadland, the blonde rebel girl, was Errol Flynn’s current lover, and I understand that the best fight scene was never put on film. The rumor is that one day after filming was finished many of the cast and crew were enjoying the evening . . . . most probably with ample alcohol. It seems that Errol Flynn’s wife Patrice made a comment about her ‘elderly’ husband Errol, and his young blonde lover attacked her and the two women had a fight that was worthy of a Jerry Springer episode.

Errol Flynn would die suddenly soon after filming this movie while on a trip in Canada with his blonde rebel girl Beverly. Supposedly Errol Flynn once said, “The public has always expected me to be a playboy, and a decent chap never lets his public down.” Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
