Scotch on the Rocks

They just don't make comedies like this anymore. The ability of British and Scottish authors to weave subtle humor into almost every serious line of the story is unequalled to this day, in my humble opinion. And the complexity of a simple story turned into a twisted tale of family history and elusive love is marvelously told. In medieval Scotland the first Earl of Locharne built a castle with 48 bedrooms, but in 1952 John, Earl of Locharne is hiding from bill collectors and trying to earn an existence by taking in boarders as a bed and breakfast. I'm going to give you a quick introduction to the main characters, and then you are on your own . . . . . . First is David Tomlinson as the Earl of Locharne, descendant of a proud Scottish family that is about to lose his family castle. The amazing Margaret Rutherford is Miss Veronica Hatworth Nicholson, a quirky history buff that is staying at the castle/bed and breakfast and trying to find proof that the Earl of Locharne is the true descendant of the King of Scotland and should be returned to the throne. Helen Cherry is the 'boss' that runs the staff of the castle, deeply in love with the penniless Earl of Locharne, but he has no idea. Barbara Kelly is a cheeky and wealthy gal from Colorado, USA who believes that she is a long lost member of the family and has an interest in buying the castle, and the Earl falls for the sexy blonde from America. Stuffy Brit Mr. Phillips is a man from the government that wants to take the castle without paying for it and use it as a resort for vacationing coal miners. All of these people will entwine with each other in a comedy extraordinaire about the future of Castle Locharne and the characters I've told you about. Oh, . . . did I mention the ghost? It seems that the first Earl of Locharne had a young mistress that died and haunts the castle to this day. Patricia Dainton plays the part of the beautiful young ghostess who regularly appears to the guests of the castle. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
