Buster Keaton’s Brother & the Playboy Centerfold

The famous silent screen comedian Buster Keaton had a younger brother Harry, nine years his junior. Harry also acted in silent movies, but never got the fame that his older brother Buster did. Harry evolved into playing character actor parts in the B movies, like this exploitation crime drama from George Weiss from 1954. He possibly wanted to hide his connection to Buster because he usually had the producer spell his last name with an 'a' instead of an 'o,' as Harry Keatan.

George Weiss made several 'Mothers, warn your children about . . . ' movies, and this one is about young girls sucked into the grasp of a drug dealer that gets them hooked on drugs and forces them into crime in order to pay for the dope that they have become addicted to. Harry played the part of 'Doc' - a doctor who lost his license to practice and was on the payroll of the big drug dealer in town. And the girls? Joanne Arnold, the lead actress, was the May 1954 Playboy Centerfold. Producer Weiss usually got his female actors from the Burlesque stage, and this movie included dancers Mary Metier, Peggy Winters, and Thelma Montgomery. I don't imagine that this movie was seen in most of the nation's movie theaters because it clearly violated several rules of the Hays Office, which was still censoring and approving movies for view by the general public in 1954. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and watch an exploitation crime drama that never quite got an Oscar nod, but still will keep you entertained watching the 1950's cars, clothes and people.
