She Kissed Me, so I Had to Kill Her . . .

London born Christopher Lee became famous for his horror characters beginning with his 1957 movie "Curse of Frankenstein" and is now approaching 300 film and television appearances. His career began on a BBC television show named Kaleidoscope, and then bit parts in movies. In this 1955 thriller he is John Preston, a wealthy stranger who settles in a small British town and becomes one of the town's leading citizens. He woos and plans to wed the banker's daughter, while her childhood sweetheart goes almost berserk with jealousy because his girl has so quickly turned her affections to John Preston. Soon a local man who has become an internationally famous psychiatrist returns to the small town to start a practice, and John Preston seems very much against him. Preston tells the psychiatrist that a man's mind is his castle, and no doctor should invade that castle. But one day John Preston visits the doctor and tells him about a murderous dream that he often has . . . and our mystery begins. What is dream . . . what is real . . . who is really insane . . . who is really diabolical . . . reality and dreams melt together into a crime thriller that will unfold in the amazingly understated British style. Unlike Hollywood thrillers we will not experience music that makes our skin creep, we will not be presented with visual cliff-hanging scenes that will make our hair stand on end . . . no . . . this thriller is much more devious . . . The 1955 British style of horror is to walk us down a story path that while hinting at the horror ahead, calmly shows us that everything is quiet and calm and normal . . . no goose-bump surprises . . . how diabolical those Brit directors are! It is almost impossible to guess the ending . . . almost. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
