When Murder is Just A Game . . . maybe

Most of my family hunts fresh game for the dinner table and the kids are taught to use guns safely at an early age. Unfortunately I was not so lucky. My dad was a country preacher, and for whatever reason, although he grew up on a farm and hunted and fished he never carried those skills into his adult life. I never recall dad ever going hunting or fishing or enjoying any other outdoor sport, and I didn't fall too far from that tree. A few years ago I was decidedly a bit envious as I was visiting with one of my sisters and her kids. Her adult daughter Susan said that both she and her husband looked forward to deer hunting season every year, and their winter food budget depended on both of them bagging a big deer and having them butchered and packed away in the freezer. The early pioneers to America only survived because they learned to hunt and fish in the wilderness of new America. But once in a while hunting can be a a dangerous game . . . especially when the target is another man. That wasn't a new concept to motion pictures in 1956 . . . in 1932 actress Fay Wray was in a thriller about a hunter on a remote island that hunted men for sport in The Most Dangerous Game. This movie brings the murdering hunt for man to a new level by bringing it into the modern world, in the middle of a large city, with a death hunt on the dark streets of Los Angeles. Now, I don't want to give too much away, but get ready for a really big surprise, because mild and meek Chuck Connors, best known as the peace loving television Rifleman, is a demented killer trying to avenge his only brother's death in the Korean War that divided South Korea from the Communist North. Big brother Frank Garrick (Chuck Connors) devises a 'game' between himself and his brother's Lieutenant . . . a game with one set of rules for the Lieutenant and another set of rules for himself. His target, Lieutenant Dan Lawton (played by Don Ross in his first starring role) needs a bunch of money to rebuild his sporting goods store, and Garrick wants to avenge his brother's death in Korea. He tells Lawton that if he agrees to a hunt, mano-a-mano with him, and Lawton wins, he will give him the money to open his new store. Lawton is unbelieving that he would suggest a hunt to the death, but our demented killer quickly tells him that they will not be trying to kill each other . . . but only take a picture with two special 30-30 shotguns that will fire a tiny bullet-camera. Of course Lawton gets a gun with a camera in it, and Garrick gets a shotgun with real 30-30 shells, and the hunt begins . . . One man will die before the ending, and one man will live. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it, and don't sit with a door or window at your back!
