A Ball . . . Not a Ball and Chain
What can I say about a 1956 sexpolitation movie made on a shoestring budget by first time actors? Wow, I loved watching the chassis on those gorgeous . . . 1956 automobiles! In the scene where boss Bernie drives into the parking lot of the Colony in his big white Cadillac convertible that was about a mile long, I was positively drooling with lust at his ride. And Joy Reynolds, who played the lead part of a young girl from small town America who goes to Hollywood in search of fame and fortune is very easy on the eyes also. It's a shame that the movie credits are sparse, there are a couple of actors that I can't identify that have interesting parts. Notably the whacky 'Joker' character always trying unsuccessfully to crack wise. The copy of the movie that I have was re-titled as The Wild and Wicked in a later release, but it is in reality the movie originally named The Flesh Merchant. Young Nancy Sheridan has an older sister Paula who lives in Hollywood and has a nice apartment, furs and is apparently very successful. Younger sister Nancy figures that Paula is a famous advertising model, but in reality she is a high priced hooker. Nan is determined to get her own furs and jewels in the big city Instead of going back home on the bus as big sister Paula tries to force her to do, she hops a cab and heads for an art studio that she discovered on a business card in Paula's apartment. Soon she is modeling nude for an art class, and quickly gets sent to the 'Colony' - a resort outside the city for wealthy businessmen to come and live life in the raw . . . with the girls provided by the resort. When Nancy meets her roommate at the Colony, and older gal named 'Easy,' Nancy asks her why she hasn't found a rich husband yet. Easy tells her that the men here are already married, and they come to the Colony for a ball . . . not a ball and chain. It is 1956, and this wild and outrageous tale would barely rate as exciting even on afternoon television these days, but I'm sure in 1956 it was quite controversial. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter and enjoy the show.
