The King, the Boy, and the Giant

Orson Welles was born to a wealthy family in Kenosha, Wisconsin in 1915. His father was wealthy from a 1902 patent that allowed him to create and sell bicycle lamps. The user would place chunks of calcium carbide in a lower chamber and fill an upper chamber with water. When water dripped on the calcium carbide, it would create acetylene gas that would escape through a small hole, and a match would light that fire, creating a candle size flame.

Unfortunately, when Thomas Edison created the first electric light, the carbide lamp business went away, and Orson Welles’ father lost his fortune, and descended into an alcoholic abyss. His mother got a divorce, left his father, and resumed her concert pianist career. Unfortunately, when Orson Welles was nine years old, she died from jaundice, and a family friend took Orson in.

In spite of his troubled youth, his talents for acting and storytelling were recognized and nurtured, and he would become legendary in American theater. In 1938 he wrote and performed in a radio play about the story “The War of the Worlds” that got nationwide attention. Three years after his fame for radio productions, he decided to write, direct, produce, and star in his first motion picture.

I cannot find any evidence of any other person in history writing, producing, directing and starring in a movie for the very first time that got as much fame and acclaim as this motion picture. “Citizen Kane” was soon, and still is, recognized as one of the best movies ever made, and brought ‘Rosebud’ into the language of every film buff.

In this movie Orson Welles plays the part of King Saul. The outdoor scenes were filmed in and near Jerusalem and in Croatia, where the actor playing David was from. The studio shots were done at the Amato Studios in Rome. The dialogue is in ‘King James English,’ and although this might slow you down a bit in the understanding, the plot is a good one and will keep you enchanted until the end. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
