In the mid 1980's I was the General Manager for a Denny's restaurant on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio, and at the same time worked three evenings a week at a small smoke shop in the Great Northern shopping mall selling pipes, tobacco and cigars. Along with the tobacco goods the store sold a blend of unique gift items not generally available in other stores. During my years at that store I purchased several expensive, unique and beautiful beer steins with the stamp of West Germany on the bottom. My final purchase was of a beautiful large stein commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall in November of 1989, with a small chunk of that famous wall embedded in the pewter lid. It was one of the final steins created in the nation of 'West Germany,' just before they united again to become one nation. This is also the when I started my love affair with computers. With my first computer I created a monthly newsletter for my employees at the Denny's restaurant, and called it 'My Hammy Herald.' I was hooked, and after leaving restaurant management computers became an ever increasing part of my life. It was the beginning of discovering and following my passion. West Germany only existed from the end of WWII until 1989, and this movie was filmed by a West German movie company that filmed most of the movie in Nicola, Yugoslavia. Today there is no more West Germany and Yugoslavia is also a nation of the past. But the theme of this movie . . . scantily clad young beauties in grave danger continues to be a popular format even today.
In this adventure, a handful of dancers are headed for a tour around the world, but when their plane burns and crashes into the ocean, only the girls and their leader survive and make their way to a supposedly deserted island. They discover a deserted cabin with the body of a scientist stuck to a huge spider web in the corner. It seems that there are giant radioactive mutant spiders on the island that will endanger all of them. Thank goodness a couple of virile young men arrive to replenish the dead scientist's supplies, and they can provide us with wonderful scenes of 1960's style rock and roll dance moves with the young girls in their skimpy bikini island wear. If you want to remember the 1960's, or peek at what the music and dance was during the first years of rock and roll, you'll have a great time watching this one. Otherwise, you might enjoy your bowl of white kernel buttered popcorn better than the movie. The Spider Monster wouldn't scare many folks over the age of ten or so, except maybe my big sister Carol . . .
