When I was a teen I lived in a very small town in western Pennsylvania, much like the small town in this movie from 1960 . . . well . . . a little bit like this small town. Of course, Shanksville didn't have a diner like this movie small town . . . and it didn't have a pool hall either. Come to think of it I don't remember any cat house in Shanksville either . . . at least not any that I ever knew about. Oh, and there was no jail, and no Sheriff either, and there was no train going through town that might have hobos on it. Just a bunch of houses along a couple of streets, three or four stop signs, and a school at the top of the hill leading out of town. The school was THE school for the whole area, with first grade at one end and twelfth grade at the other. Okay, so the small town I spent my teen years in is nothing like the small town in this movie. But even though Shanksville wasn't as big as this movie town, I can identify with the characters very well. I would have been the naive kid that couldn't fight very well and was definitely not what anyone would call 'street wise.' And I can remember a couple of kids in school that could be the street wise tough guy that wasn't at all a bad guy, just a fellow that had been exposed to the rougher side of life. And I imagine that every town big or small has the same kind of girls. Some sweet and naive, and some that have seen the wilder side of life and like to party. Unfortunately by the time I was a teen like the kids in this movie the wonderful jazz music had gone out of style. I loved the sound of the brushes across the snare drums whenever there was fist fighting to do in this movie from the jazz days. And the beat of the base during the tense moments is pretty cool, if I do say so myself. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with tons of warm melted butter on it and get ready for a story right out of the 1960's when the post World War II baby-boomers were coming of age.
