Rescuing the General

Marine Captain John Larsen, played by George Montgomery, is a hard-drinking, womanizing soldier on his way to fighting in World War II, but while in the Philippines, before he can see any action, he loses his right hand while on a drinking binge in a freak accident. As our adventure begins he is having a final evening of booze and women at the local whore house before heading back home. The next morning he gets a phone call and boards a small ship that will take him on the first leg of his journey home . . . But first they must stop at an Oceanside jungle spot where they will exchanged some money with a local group of bandits headed by Santana . . . It seems that a U.S. Brigadier General bailed out of a crashing airplane and was captured by the bandits, and they want some money in exchange for his safe return. Larsen and the ship's captain board a small boat and head for the shore to meet the bandits but instead of the bandits and the General, a group of enemy soldiers emerges from the jungle and sprays the small motor boat with bullets, killing the ship's captain. Larsen gets the motorboat back to the ship and convinces the sailor in charge to drop him off a couple of miles away so he can go after the enemy soldiers and the kidnapped General. He quickly meets the bandit group headed by Santana and learns that the enemy soldiers took the missing General from the bandit group and vanished into the dense Philippine jungle. Larsen reluctantly teams up with the local bandits to chase after the enemy soldiers and free the General from his captivity. George Montgomery wrote, directed and financed several jungle adventures based in the Philippines, and while they were never thought of as being in the same league as Casablanca or Gone with the Wind . . . . Indeed few of the thousands of motion pictures are . . . But that said, this jungle adventure can provide 90 minutes of wonderful escape from the daily surroundings as we escape to the war time jungles of the Philippines. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
