The Last Dare-Devil Stunt Man

Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel was born on October 17, 1938 and his passion was to chase death and cheat it. I remember as a young teen watching him on the ABC television network with his white leather outfit and big, bad motorcycles. In fact, some of his televised jumps are included in this movie biography of the great showman. All through this motion picture there are allusions to his desire to jump the Grand Canyon, and for years he planned and petitioned the government for permission to make the attempt. I can still remember the day that he made a dare-devil live television jump of the Snake River Canyon in a rocket assisted motorcycle. Now, fess up people . . . underneath all of the 'politically correct' reasons to go to a car race or motorcycle race is for the chance to see and later tell about the great crash. Watching a bunch of cars going endlessly in a circle isn't much more fun than watching grass grow . . . but that great crash . . . Now, you don't want anyone to be hurt or killed of course, but the crash . . . the flames . . . the sirens of the rescue team . . . my adrenaline is pumping now just writing the words. For years and years the ABC Wide World of Sports would begin every Saturday afternoon show with 'The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat' while showing television footage of snow skier Vinko Bogataj crashing off of the ski jump ramp with arms and legs flailing wildly in the air . . . after seeing it hundreds of times I still watched and believed that those few seconds of tape were the most exciting moments of the whole show . . . and many times they were. If you can get into a bit of a rebel, 'I can do as I please' mood, with no rules and few limitations, you can rock along with George Hamilton to the wild and crazy days of the late 1960's with America's greatest Dare Devil of the age, Bobby "Evel" Knievel. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter and enjoy the show . . . oh, . . . and about that jump over the Grand Canyon . . . in 1971 when this movie was made Knievel was still only 33 years old, and looking forward to the ultimate dare-devil stunt at the Grand Canyon. Did he make it? This movie ends with an attempt at jumping over the Grand Canyon still only a focused dream for him . . . you can find out the rest of the story here: Evel Knievel Web Site
