Movie Star Gossip . . .
Before I tell you the basic plot, I'd like to let you know a bit about a couple of the actors. Old timers like me will fondly remember Karl Malden for both his credit card commercials (Don't leave home without it), and his starring television role as Detective Lieutenant Mike Stone in the 1977 show 'The Streets of San Francisco.' In this movie, made before he became a big tv star, he is also a cop, hired by the mob to help them hunt down a killer. Early on in the story our killer makes love to a mobster boss' secretary, the long haired girl with the beauty mark near her lips . . . Claudine Auger, the 1958 Miss France beauty, first became famous in movies when she played 'Domino' opposite Sean Connery in the James Bond movie 'Thunderball' in 1966. And that blonde haired killer that everyone is after . . . you probably won't notice the resemblance in his first scenes, but as the story develops you will see expressions on Christopher Mitchum's face that will surely remind you of his famous father, actor Robert Mitchum. There is one more actor that you should meet, and that is the young daughter of the mob boss who is kidnapped by Mitchum's character, said by many in the 1960's and 1970's to be the most beautiful woman in the world. Olivia Hussy, born Olivia Osuna in Buenos Aires City, Argentina, is not related to the American actress Ruth Hussey. She skyrocketed to acting fame and acted opposite some of the best actors in some of the juiciest parts of the time. Her first big part was in Romeo and Juliet in 1968 before she was 18 years old. There was a short nude scene in the movie, and she was not yet 18 years old, so she was not permitted to go into the theater for the premier of the movie . . . Even though the nude in the movie was her! In 1971, two years before this movie was released, she married Dean Paul Martin, son of Dean 'Deano' Martin, and gave us Alexander Martin, a grandson to Dean Martin.
Okay, now that the gossip is out of the way, a little teaser to get you interested in the story. The movie opens with a very young boy who is watching his papa get brutally killed by mobsters. We then segway several years ahead and discover that Christopher Mitchum is Ray Castor, the boy grown up, and methodically hunting down and killing the men who murdered his papa so many years ago. As mobsters are dropping dead, the call goes out to Karl Malden, as Police Captain John Kiley. He is on the hunt for the killer, and the surviving mobster boss, Lasaro Alfredi knows that he is next, and wants to find the killer even more than the cop. When the killer cannot get close to the mob boss, he discovers that he has a young daughter in school and kidnaps her so that he can get the mob boss to come out into the open to rescue his daughter. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
