Dead Man Shooting

Cowboy movies from the 1930's and the 1940's were all pretty good, and they continue even today. Although they are not as plentiful as back in the golden age of Westerns, when they were made they were usually much more suspenseful and action packed, and after the Hays Office closed down once in a while the bad guy was allowed to become the good guy, like in this most excellent cowboy thriller. Fast drawing gunslinger Devlin is headed for the gallows in a small Kansas town for defending himself against another gunslinger and his hanging is in the morning. As a kindness the local doctor gives him enough laudanum so that he won't feel much pain, and as a result of that . . . or maybe because of divine intervention . . . after he is hanged and pronounced dead, he slowly returns to life. Now, this little town has a big businessman who smelts the silver from the mines nearby, and he badly wants to own the mine that widow Gault has. Bad guy Halleck, played by Cameron Mitchell, sends his hired guns to burn down the ranch, destroy their water supply, and do everything he can short of killing the widow to drive her away so that he can have the silver in her mine. Back in town, as the hanged man gunslinger Devlin, played by Steve Forrest, comes back to life the fates put him in contact with the widow lady and he tries to save her from bad guy Halleck. That's about all you need to know about the plot, but before you get into the story let me give you a bit of trivia that intrigued me, as the son of a preacher. The hero, Steve Forrest, is the son of a Baptist minister, and the bad guy, Cameron Mitchell, is the son of a Pennsylvania Dutch minister. Dean Jagger, another actor in this film became famous after playing the part of Brigham Young in a 1940 movie, and was so taken with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that he became a member. Now, this doesn't say much, as there were many, many more actors without any preacher connection . . . . I'm just sayin’ . . . . us preacher's kids . . . actually I don't just know what I'm saying . . . . must be a 'senior' moment or something . . . . Go ahead now and pop your bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
