Armored Car Robbery Gone Wrong

Maybe you can tell a book by it's cover, but I surely could not predict the fun and suspense and surprise that awaited me when I watched this 1978 crime drama. With Ida Lupino, famous in later years for being involved in 'mothers, warn your children' do-good movies . . . and Lloyd Nolan, always a good guy, and a movie about some young lads in a reformatory . . . I figured that this was a movie about the good works that reformatories were doing with young rebel delinquents . . . or maybe a story about how badly our reformatories were dealing with delinquency . . . But no, this story is about an armored car robbery gone wrong, committed by three boys with the perfect alibi . . . . They were locked inside a prison reformatory when the robbery took place. For 85 of the 88 minute movie it is exactly that . . . A crime adventure where three young delinquents sneak out of the reformatory and with the help of a young girl rob an armored car and take it on a ride for more loot while being chased by security man Dan Montgomery, played by Lloyd Nolan. The kids get away with their crime and safely get back inside the reformatory before the robbery is discovered. Forget about the off-key lounge singer who wrote and sang the sappy theme song . . . the story is much better than the song portends. Forget that the first scenes seem to predict a story about uncaring parents and misguided teens . . . This is a crime adventure worthy of the 1970's with car chases ending in rollover havoc, off road bike chases, awesome hair styles and clothing from the days when the baby-boomers ruled the world . . . I even got a touch of nostalgia when the kids had to push-start their getaway car . . . can one still push-start a manual transmission car today? Do they still make manual transmission cars today? You probably haven't noticed, but I'm not going into a lot of detail about the story line past the robbery itself . . . There is a reason . . . . I am bursting at the seams to make a statement about the ending, and am at this point fighting with my fingers to not push the keys that will tell you ANYTHING about the surprise ending, and the surprise, surprise final words before our lounge singer sings us through the closing credits. I will not hint . . . I must not hint . . . don't you DARE sweep to the final five minutes before you watch the rest . . . Promise me now, or there will be no warm melted butter for your bowl of white kernel popcorn.
