Merry Christmas, Heidi

He was born to an Irish-Scottish farm family and was a fullback on his high school football team, and he went to college intending to become a football coach, but the universe had other plans for Burl Ives. I remember his golden voice as a youngster talking and singing in Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and to this day hunt for and watch that 1964 classic every Christmas.

In this new Heidi classic, Burl Ives is Grandfather Wilhelm Beck and Heidi’s life is perfect living with Grandfather on top of their Swiss mountain . . . except for the crazy wild wilderness man that Heidi and her playmante Peter sometimes catch watching them.

Then tragically, Grandfather learns that he is slowly going blind. At first, he decides to send Heidi to the cousins who don’t really like Heidi, but Heidi insists on staying with Grandfather to help him as he goes blind . . . but the fates have a different path for Heidi and Grandfather.

One day when Peter gets lost while chasing the wild man Grandfather joins the search for Peter and while tramping around in the mountain wilderness goes totally blind and gets hopelessly lost. When all hope of finding Grandfather is gone, the cousins are called to come and get Heidi, but the fates provide a different path for little Heidi. Heidi and Grandfather helped a runaway school girl who is the rebellious daughter of a wealthy hotel mogul father who has no time for his daughter, and Heidi goes to live with little Elizabeth in a big and luxurious mansion full of everything . . . everything except love and quality time with wealthy father Dan.

With Christmas approaching, workaholic businessman Dan takes his little girl Elizabeth and her playmate Heidi to New York City with him and little Elizabeth thinks that for the first time in her life she will spend a family Christmas with her father . . . but father is so busy working that the two little girls are stuck in one of his fancy hotel rooms alone . . . What kind of Christmas will that be? . . . Bah . . . Humbug . . . Grab the kids, pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
