Second Class Sadie, the Handsome Marine and the Salvation Man

“Those who are shown the key to salvation and refuse to open the door must be destroyed,” said reformer Alfred Davidson. My papa was a preacher, but he was not the kind of preacher that Walter Huston portrays as religious reformer Alfred Davidson in this South Seas adventure.

The author of this story, W. Somerset Maugham was educated as a doctor, and became a British secret agent during World War One. He was born the same year as Alfred Hitchcock and died the same year as Alfred Hitchcock. He was one of the few authors that Alfred Hitchcock claimed to enjoy reading during his leisure time.

W. Somerset Maugham traveled the world in search of stories like this one. In this adventure a handful of people on a ship in the South Seas are forced to spend a couple of weeks on the remote island of Pago Pago. Self-styled religious reformer Alfred Davidson travels the South Seas with his wife trying mightily to get everyone he meets to join him in his vision of salvation.

Joan Crawford plays the part of Sadie Thompson, a woman who can drink, smoke and talk like the Marines stationed on the small island of Pago Pago. Reformer Davidson’s wife is convinced that Sadie is a party girl prostitute by the way she looks and acts.

Character actor Guy Kibbee is Joe Horn, owner of the trading post on the island, and William Gargan is a young U.S. Marine who falls in love with Sadie.

“Those who are shown the key to salvation and refuse to open the door must be destroyed,” said reformer Alfred Davidson. Death and destruction are indeed on the way, but not like you might imagine. W. Somerset Maugham wasn’t the most highly paid author in the 1930’s because he wrote stories that followed a predictable path. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
