Murder at Red Rock Tavern

Fans of classic cinema will probably recognize several of the players in this murder thriller, but let me tell you about one that you may not recognize. Clara Kimball Young, who is the wife of the tavern owner in this story, acted on stage with her actor parents at the age of three, in 1893. When moving pictures were invented, one of the first motion picture studios in the U.S. hired Clara, and beginning in 1909 she began making motion pictures and continued until 1941 when she retired from acting. She was one of the true pioneers of motion pictures.

Jimmy and Marjorie want to get married. Jimmy is a police detective and Marjorie is a cute blonde gal that is a five and dime store detective. The marriage license clerk tells them that they cannot get married immediately here, but if they go to a small tavern just across the state line they can be married there.

The marriage clerk telegraphs a Justice of the Peace in the next state and asks him to meet the young couple at the Red Rock Tavern while the young couple heads to the tavern. When they get to the tavern they discover that it is a very spooky place, and they aren’t there long before one of the guests is murdered.

The murders mount quickly and it becomes certain that there is a demented killer in the tavern who is going to kill everyone inside. The cop and his bride begin searching for the identity of the killer without much luck, and the murders continue. Finally, as the tension builds, we will begin guessing who the killer is, but we are probably wrong.

It is my custom to grab screen shots of the actors, and I got a great screen shot of the killer, with demented eyes, ominous scowl, and a face full of hatred . . . . I destroyed that screen shot, so that you cannot look down over the photos and discover who the killer is. It was a great photo, and I thought long and hard before destroying it, but I did destroy it, so that you can pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm, melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
