The Hypnotic Kiss

I’ve been told that when it comes to love that opposites attract . . . . I’ve also been told that a man and woman with much in common make the best couples . . . Which is it? . . . Do you know? In this romantic adventure Loretta Young is about to marry Broderick Crawford and settle down to a life of a dutiful housewife and mother, but something inside her is twitching for adventure. She has clipped an advertisement from the newspaper about the all-seeing and all-knowing Arturo the Great . . . A magician and hypnotist who promises to reveal the future of any young woman who asks. She goes to the theater where the Great Arturo is performing, and when he sees her in the crowd, he is instantly smitten. Tony Arturo, played by David Niven, asks her to chat with him after everyone else has gone, and the two fall immediately in love. She cancels her wedding and goes to London with the great magician to be his assistant, and wife. She loves Tony so much that she can easily tolerate his celebrity lifestyle and the occasional lipstick marks on his shirt collar. She declares to him that she is certainly the only woman in the world who could love him like she does, but she has a secret plan for their future. She is secretly replacing all of the expensive jewelry that he gives her with fakes, and her grandfather back in New York is selling them and building a home in the country for her and her celebrity husband. When the day comes that the house is built and ready for the couple, she tells the Great Arturo about the house and her plan for them both to quit the celebrity circuit and spend their days in the quiet country home. Unfortunately Tony has just signed a contract for another two year tour of Europe and brushes off her idea of settling down to a domestic life. When she realizes that he will never give up his fame and fortune for a quiet life with her, she leaves him and disappears out of his life. He is heartbroken for a while, and searches in vain for her. She has gone to Reno with aunt Abby for a divorce, and on a long after-divorce cruise meets her old boyfriend and they have the ship’s captain marry them just before they dock in New York. What’s up with this? Aren’t romantic comedies required to end happily ever after? Shouldn’t she go back to the celebrity lifestyle and the man she loves? . . . . . Shouldn’t he give up his celebrity life to find and claim the only woman who could keep up with his lifestyle? Something’s gotta give here . . . . Am I right, or am I right? . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
