Love For Sale

When World War Two began, big bandleader Glenn Miller was earning twenty thousand dollars a week, but he offered his services to the military and he was soon in England with the Army Air Forces organizing a band and playing swing music concerts for our military men overseas. In December of 1944, a year after this movie was released, Glenn Miller flew from England to Paris, and he invited a 21-year-old British blonde singing sensation to go with him. Fortunately, Anne Shelton had events scheduled that she could not cancel, or she would have been on the plane that disappeared over the ocean, ending the legendary career of Glenn Miller.

Patricia Jacqueline Sibley began singing when she was twelve years old, and had a recording contract when she was fifteen years old as Anne Shelton. When Britain entered World War Two in 1940, she was seventeen years old. She was soon singing for the British troops at every opportunity. After the war, Anne Shelton continued to devote considerable time performing for the British Not Forgotten Association that benefits disabled military personnel, and in 1990 was given the “Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.”

In this war-time comedy, she is a twenty-year-old announcer for the Southern Railway and she opens the story by singing the announcements. The two headlining actors are legendary British slapstick comedian Arthur Askey, and Bronx born Evelyn Dall, who acted in two movie shorts in New York before moving to England to appear in this movie and five more British motion pictures.

Arthur Askey and Evelyn Dall are partners in a London escort business, and singer Anne Shelton is the first girl that they persuade to volunteer as an escort for lonely military men on leave. On her first assignment, she meets a Captain on leave and their date is filled with enough misunderstanding to keep them apart until the final happy ending. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
