The Lady in Search of a Mad Murderer

The baby boom generation remembers Hugh Beaumont as the perfect father in the family situation comedy television show “Leave it to Beaver.” In this story he is Larry Craig, the fiancĂ© of Vicki, the heroine amateur detective in this noir thriller. Vicki is the future bride played by Mary Beth Hughes, who was encouraged to become an actress by her grandmother, who was an accomplished stage actress.

Vicki is planning to marry Larry in a couple of months, as soon as his current wife is declared dead. On the last night that Larry saw his wife, they were planning to get a divorce, but the next day Larry’s wife disappeared, and has never been seen since. It has been seven years, and in a couple of months Larry’s wife will be legally declared dead, and Vicki will be able to marry Larry.

As our thriller opens, Vicki is alone in her apartment, and when a stranger knocks on her door, she opens it and sees a woman that she does not know. This visitor is Larry’s long-lost wife, who has returned after being away for seven years. She tells Vicki that she will never give Larry a divorce, and she will never marry Larry. She tells Vicki that she should thank her because she is doing Vicki a favor.

Larry’s wife is murdered that same night, and it will be up to Vicki to discover who the killer is. Unfortunately, near the end of her search for the killer, she will be face-to-face with the killer, only seconds away from her own death. Maybe ladies should leave the detective work to the men, or, . . . maybe not. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
