Florida Never Smelled Like This, or, The Devil Made Me Do It!

When this movie was filmed, the working title was, "Me and Satan," but before it was released, they producers decided that a lot of people in small-town America would not pay money to see a movie about Satan, so the name was changed to 'Angel on my Shoulder."

What a difference a name makes - they didn't change any of the content, just the title, and it made all the difference in the world. Claude Rains, one of my favorite actors stars as Nick the devil and ruler of Hell.

Gangster Eddie Kagle, played by Paul Muni, one of the big screen's classic bad guys, gets out of prison, and his old partner promptly shoots him dead. He descends into Hell, where he hears a lady saying, "It's awful hot here, it must be Florida," to which the dead gangster responds with a snarl, "Florida never smelled like this!"

Claude Rains is Nick, the ruler of Hell, who discovers that dead gangster Eddie Kagle looks exactly like a Judge that the Devil wants to corrupt. So the Devil (Claude Rains), makes a deal with Eddie.

Eddie wants revenge on his pal Smiley, who killed him, and the Devil wants a corrupt judge, so the Devil tells gangster Eddie that if he will take over the body of Judge Parker, a righteous man, the Devil will have a friendly judge, and Eddie can kill the henchman that sent him to hell. Eddie agrees, and the Devil and Eddie head up to earth, each intent on having their revenge. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
